How Do Campers and Parents Find Your Summer Camp? The New Rules of Marketing & PR – David Meerman Scott

January 10th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Marketing and Business

Inbound Marketing SummitBrian Halligan, CEO and Co-Founder of HubSpot, started off the 2008 Inbound Marketing Summit with an introduction to the world of Inbound Marketing. He commented on how we have become immune to to traditional marketing from skipping commercials on our Tivo to reading news online in blogs.

What is inbound marketing? Brian Halligan describes it as “learning to take advantage of the natural way people shop and learn to get found, from outbound interruption based marketing to permission based inbound marketing.”  How do you leverage these new technologies as a summer camp director? Is anyone using the tons of mom and dad bloggers to get their message out either about their camp or the value of camp in general?

Summer Camps are just beginning to think about this in a broader way. This video is from David Meerman Scott’s keynote at the Inbound Marketing Summit 2008. Quoting Yoda he said, “You must unlearn what you have learned.” This is as true about summer camps as it is about corporations. He has a number of great suggestions that summer camp directors and recreation professionals can apply.

In his upcoming [book] World Wide Rave: Creating Triggers that Get Millions of People to Spread Your Ideas and Share Your Stories David has come up with a list of “Rules of the Rave.”

  1. nobody cares about your products (except you)
  2. no coercion required
  3. lose control
  4. put down virtual roots
  5. create triggers that encourage people to share
  6. point the world to your virtual doorstep

What will you take away from David Meerman Scott’s keynote and how will you change your marketing this summer? Are you stuck thinking that this does not apply to the camp and recreation profession? The economy is tight – what will you do differently?

  • Wow. Thanks for writing about my ideas here. I really appreciate it.

Summer camps are perfect for the sorts of strategies that I talk about and that HubSpot helps implement.

Imagine a parent going to Google and starting a search for, say, “canoeing camp in New England” (which I recently did). If that describes your camp, why didn't I find you?

The good news is you can fix that and be found by people looking for you.
